Game Pass hidden gems 2026

Xbox Game Pass Hidden Gems: 20 Games Worth Playing Right Now (2026)

Fred
Fred · · 9 min read

Game Pass Ultimate now costs $29.99/month. That’s a real subscription commitment, and paradoxically, the bigger the library gets, the harder it becomes to pick something to play.

Most “best Game Pass games” lists recommend Hades 2, Hollow Knight, Balatro, and Hi-Fi Rush. Those are all genuinely great. You’ve also probably already heard about them a dozen times.

This list is organized differently. Everything here is a game that’s either new enough to not be on most recommendation lists, old enough to be completely forgotten in a 400-game library, or genuinely obscure in a way that the algorithm never surfaces. And it’s organized by time commitment, because at 3-7 hours a week, you need to know whether you’re looking at a one-evening game or a two-month project.

Quick notes on availability

Game Pass is a living library. Games rotate in and out. Everything on this list was confirmed active on Game Pass as of April 2026. If something has left by the time you read this, the recommendation still holds for purchase , these are all worth owning.

Also: several of these are on Game Pass Ultimate only, not Essential. Check your tier if something isn’t appearing.

The Weeknight Games (2-6 Hours Total)

Easy Delivery Co.

Added March 26, 2026 | ~2-4 hours

A narrative adventure about a delivery driver. Recent enough that most recommendation lists don’t have it yet. Screen Rant called it “2025’s greatest hidden gem.” Short, sweet, and finished in a single evening.

If your weeknight gaming window is 90 minutes or less, this is a complete experience you can start and finish before bed.

Unpacking

~3-4 hours | Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam

Zen puzzle game where you unpack boxes across eight stages of a character’s life. No wrong answers. No timers. No stress. Every object finds a place.

It tells a complete wordless story about a person’s entire adult life through the things they own and where they put them. Three to four hours, start to finish, pure decompression. I’ve recommended this game to more non-gamers than anything else and it’s worked every time.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War

~6 hours | Won Best Narrative at TGA 2014

A side-scrolling adventure set in World War I following four characters whose lives intersect around the trenches. Puzzle-based, emotionally devastating, genuinely beautiful.

It came out in 2014. It’s been on Game Pass for a while. It gets zero recommendation traffic because it’s old and not a genre that shows up in algorithm surfaces. This is exactly the kind of game that gets buried in a 400-title library.

If you want something that takes 6 hours and makes you feel something real: this.

Indika

Added January 2026 | ~4-5 hours

An alternate-history Russia game about a young nun who hears a voice in her head that might be the devil. Dark humor, religious philosophy, an unusual structure where playing retro video games unlocks character development.

Metacritic is around 73 and reviews are polarized , some people love it, some bounce off it. For adults who want something genuinely weird and literary that doesn’t exist in any clean genre category, Indika is the recommendation. It has ideas and it commits to them.

The Weekend Games (8-17 Hours)

Pentiment ★ Most Underrated Game on the Service

~15-20 hours | Metacritic 86

A murder mystery set in 15th-century Bavaria. You play Andreas Maler, an illuminator working on a manuscript in a monastery while a murder investigation consumes the town. The art style mimics actual manuscript illustration. The dialogue is historically grounded.

This is the single most recommended “best game nobody played” on Game Pass by anyone who has discovered it. Josh Sawyer (director of Fallout: New Vegas) made it at Obsidian. It sold far below what the quality deserved.

If you read those sentences and feel a faint pull: that’s your signal. Play Pentiment. It’s Xbox first-party, which means it’s permanently on Game Pass and will never leave.

Hi-Fi Rush

~10-12 hours | Metacritic 87

A rhythm-action game where every attack, parry, and movement syncs to the music. Shadow-dropped on Game Pass in January 2023 with zero prior announcement. Won Best Audio Design at The Game Awards 2023.

The studio that made it (Tango Gameworks) was closed by Microsoft in May 2024, then acquired by Krafton and relaunched as an independent studio in January 2025. Playing Hi-Fi Rush now has a small extra weight , it’s the game that proved the studio had something special, made by people who survived the shutdown.

It’s joyful. The soundtrack is excellent. The gameplay is unlike anything else on the service.

Tunic

~12-15 hours | Metacritic 85

An isometric adventure game that looks like a cute Zelda game and is secretly something much stranger. The instruction manual is in-game, written in an undeciphered language. You figure out what everything does by experimenting. The world gradually reveals its actual nature.

For players who enjoy discovery as the core gameplay loop , who liked Outer Wilds or The Witness style of “the game doesn’t tell you, you figure it out” , Tunic is essential.

Has an optional “no fail” mode that lets you focus entirely on exploration if the combat isn’t your thing.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

~15-17 hours | Metacritic 82

A story-driven stealth adventure about Amicia and her little brother Hugo fleeing across 14th-century France while the plague, rats, and the Inquisition pursue them. The sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence, but playable without having completed the first.

Genuinely moving sibling relationship, beautiful environments, rat-swarming set pieces that are technically impressive and viscerally horrible. The first game is also on Game Pass if you want the full story.

A prequel, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, is launching day-one on Game Pass in 2026.

As Dusk Falls

~6-8 hours | Xbox first-party (permanent)

An interactive drama set across two families connected by a hostage situation at a desert motel. The story spans 30 years. Every major decision has meaningful consequences. Up to 8 players can participate via a companion app on their phones , everyone votes on decisions, and the majority wins.

This is the best party-game experience on Game Pass that most people have never heard of. Playing it with friends where everyone argues about the right choice is a different experience from playing solo, and both work.

1000xResist

~8-10 hours | ~89 OpenCritic

A sci-fi narrative adventure about a cult-like society built around the memory of one person. You’re unraveling the real history through fragmented testimony and flashbacks. Multiple award nominations in 2024. Almost no mainstream gaming coverage.

The writing is the product here. Strong character work, ambitious themes around colonization and cultural memory, and the kind of ending that sits with you.

The Long Games (20+ Hours)

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut ★★ The Most Important Addition in 2026

Added March 19, 2026 | Metacritic 91 | ~30-60 hours

Disco Elysium just arrived on Game Pass and if you haven’t played it, this is your sign.

A detective RPG where you have amnesia and are trying to solve a murder while reassembling your own personality from scratch. No combat , just skill checks, dialogue choices, and the voices in your character’s head arguing about what to do. Fully voice-acted. The writing is in a different league from virtually everything else in gaming.

The freeform character-building system means your detective can be a communist idealist, a fascist reactionary, a nihilist, an ultraliberal technocrat, or an incoherent mess, and the game responds to each.

If you play one game off this list, play this one. It’s one of the highest-rated games ever made and it’s now free with your subscription.

Outer Wilds

~20 hours | Metacritic 85

A space exploration mystery where you’re reliving the same 22-minute loop. You fly a handmade spaceship between solar system bodies, gather information, and slowly piece together what happened to an ancient civilization.

The universal reaction to Outer Wilds from people who loved it: “I wish I could wipe my memory and experience it again.” It’s a one-time discovery experience , you can’t get the first playthrough back.

Has been on Game Pass since January 2022, which means it’s been overlooked for four years by people scrolling past it. Worth installing tonight.

Hollow Knight

~25-40 hours | Metacritic 87

A metroidvania set in a fallen insect kingdom. Exceptional atmosphere, precise movement, and a substantial amount of content. Now that Hollow Knight: Silksong is also on Game Pass, there’s even more reason to make sure you’ve played the original first.

If you’ve had this on your list for years and never started: start now.

Grounded

~30+ hours (co-op) | Metacritic 79

A survival co-op game where you’ve been shrunk to the size of an ant in a suburban backyard. Build bases, explore grass jungles, avoid spiders. Xbox first-party, permanent on Game Pass.

The best co-op survival game currently on the service. Works particularly well for couples or friend groups who want something to work through together over several sessions. The science-kit narrative gives the exploration structure.

Cassette Beasts

~25-30 hours

A Pokémon-like RPG where you collect and transform into monsters recorded on cassette tapes. The fusions system (combining two monsters to create a new hybrid) is genuinely inventive and creates a build space that the Pokémon games don’t have.

Consistently recommended by the Game Pass community as the best “underrated RPG on the service.” If you want a creature-collecting RPG without waiting for a new main-series Pokémon game, this is the answer.

Arriving Now / Just Added

Hades 2 , Day-One April 2026

~30-50 hours per campaign | OpenCritic 94

The sequel to the game that defined modern roguelikes. You play Melinoe (daughter of Hades) fighting through the Greek underworld. The narrative progresses whether you win or lose. Individual runs are 30-45 minutes.

One of the highest-rated games of 2025. Coming to Game Pass day-one in April 2026. If you’re reading this near that date: download it immediately.

Balatro

~Endless (30-45 min/run) | Metacritic ~90

A poker-based roguelike where you build increasingly broken decks using special Joker cards. The most addictive game released in recent years. Runs take 30-45 minutes. The “one more run” pull is genuinely dangerous for anyone with a gaming time budget.

The perfect game for short sessions , you can start and finish a run in the time it takes to watch a TV episode. The fact that you’ll want to immediately start another one is a feature, not a bug.

Blue Prince

~15-20 hours | OpenCritic 89

A puzzle roguelike exploring a shifting manor. Already covered in our Hidden Gems of 2025 article. One of the best puzzle games on the service, and it launched day-one on Game Pass so there’s no reason to buy it separately.
