Rockstar has been teasing GTA 6 for what feels like a decade. Whenever it actually launches (late 2026, early 2027, later depending on which leak you trust), it is going to demand hundreds of hours of your life. You can either arrive with a full shelf of unfinished games weighing you down, or you can use the wait productively to clear the backlog. This guide is the playbook for using the pre-GTA-6 window well.
This is the pre-launch pillar. Twelve games worth finishing (or starting) before GTA 6 drops, organized by time commitment and theme. Our broader busy gamer’s survival guide covers the daily discipline; this pillar is about the macro-level backlog strategy.
The short version
- Use the GTA 6 wait to finish big open-world games you already own (Red Dead 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring).
- Under 20 hours finishable: Hi-Fi Rush, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Sleeping Dogs.
- 20 to 50 hours: Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty, Saints Row-style crime games.
- 50+ hours: save for after GTA 6. Starting Baldur’s Gate 3 now and playing simultaneously with GTA 6 is a terrible idea.
- Arrive at GTA 6 launch with a clear backlog and energy. Starting fresh matters.
The 12 picks
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar’s magnum opus. 50 to 80 hours for the main story plus epilogue. If you bought it at launch and bounced, now is the time. By the time GTA 6 drops, you will have already experienced Rockstar storytelling at its best. Our how to restart a game you haven’t played in months framework applies directly.
2. Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty
The 2.0 rework plus Phantom Liberty DLC is a different game than the 2020 launch. 40 to 80 hours. Our Cyberpunk 2077 worth playing in 2026 verdict covers the honest case. Finishing this before GTA 6 clears one of the biggest modern open-world commitments off your list.
3. Mafia: Definitive Edition
Short crime story (12-15 hours). 1930s setting. If GTA 6 hype has you craving the crime-story genre, Mafia: DE is a focused, finishable, satisfying entry in the same universe of “gangster with conscience” narratives.
4. Sleeping Dogs
Hong Kong crime drama. 20-25 hours. Flew under the radar when it launched; still genuinely excellent. Short enough to clear in a month of weekend sessions.
5. L.A. Noire
Detective game from Rockstar. 15-25 hours. Unique interrogation mechanic. Different pace from GTA’s action but in the Rockstar family. Worth playing before GTA 6 if you want to broaden your Rockstar catalog.
6. Hi-Fi Rush
Not crime-themed, but 12-15 hours of pure polish you can finish quickly. Good palate cleanser between heavier open-world commitments.
7. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Japanese crime drama with JRPG combat. 40-60 hours. Perfect genre-adjacent pick if you want crime-story but not open-world sandbox. Sega’s Yakuza series continues to deliver.
8. Elden Ring
Not crime-themed but the other “must finish before any major new release” commitment of 2026. 60-100 hours. Finishing it means you arrive at GTA 6 without a half-finished Elden Ring save haunting your library.
9. Spider-Man 2
Insomniac’s open-world New York is finishable in 30-40 hours. Satisfies the “swing through a big city” urge without the GTA 6 time commitment. Finish it; move on.
10. Max Payne 3
Rockstar’s 2012 third-person shooter. 10-15 hours. Short, cinematic, criminally underrated. Ideal for a weekend playthrough.
11. Saints Row (2022 reboot or the 3rd)
Saints Row is the punk-rock cousin to GTA. 20-40 hours depending on which entry. More absurd, more over-the-top. Fills the “I want chaos in a city” itch.
12. Grand Theft Auto V (if you never finished it)
The previous GTA is 30-40 hours for main story. If you bought it years ago and never finished the story mode, the GTA 6 wait is the right time. You will appreciate GTA 6 more having completed GTA V’s arc.
What we did not include and why
Baldur’s Gate 3. 80-120 hours. Too much to finish before GTA 6 unless you started yesterday.
Live service games. Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Marvel Rivals. These do not “finish”; they just consume time.
Any MMO. Same logic. You will still be playing it when GTA 6 drops.
Starfield. Technically finishable but we cannot recommend it as a backlog-clearer specifically. Weak structure.
Most indie games. Great in their own right but not the “backlog crisis” category.
Scheduling your pre-GTA-6 backlog
Work backward from GTA 6’s (probable) launch date.
12+ months out: start the biggest commitment now. Red Dead 2, Cyberpunk 2077, or Elden Ring. Play at your normal pace; accept 40-50 hours over several months.
6-12 months out: rotate medium picks. Mafia, Sleeping Dogs, Hi-Fi Rush, L.A. Noire. Each is 2-4 weeks of weekend sessions.
3-6 months out: shorter titles. Max Payne 3, Yakuza if you have the time, short indies.
1-3 months out: stop starting new games. Finish what you have. Arrive at GTA 6 with your library clean.
Launch week: GTA 6 only. Do not start anything else.
The three backlog-crisis questions
Before starting a new game during the GTA 6 wait, ask:
Can I finish it before GTA 6 launches? Estimate your hours per week, multiply by weeks until launch. If the answer is no, this is the wrong game to start now.
Will I want to play this and GTA 6 simultaneously? If yes, prioritize GTA 6. If no, finish the other game first.
Will I resent not having played this when GTA 6 drops? This is the real test. Some games are “must play eventually.” Others can wait.
The “GTA 6 waiting room” mood
Pre-launch hype is a specific emotional state. Managing it matters.
Avoid hype overload. Every trailer, every leak, every Twitter thread about GTA 6 stretches your anticipation and crowds out actual gaming time. Unsubscribe from GTA 6 content creators if you are spending more time reading about the game than playing other games.
Do not compare current games to unreleased GTA 6. You will be disappointed by whatever you play because “it is not GTA 6.” Play Cyberpunk 2077 as Cyberpunk 2077, not as a lesser GTA.
Do not refresh the release date. Rockstar’s dates slip. Adjust expectations to “probably 2026 or early 2027” and move on with your life.
Platform preparation
GTA 6 will be on PS5 and Xbox Series at launch, likely with a PC version 6-18 months later. Some practical notes.
If you game on Switch 2: no GTA 6 on Switch 2. Plan to play GTA 6 on another platform or wait for the eventual (speculative) port.
If you game primarily on PC: expect to wait 6-18 months post-launch for the PC version. Plan your backlog around the delay.
If you have PS5 or Xbox Series: you are set. Prepare storage (GTA 6 will be 150-200 GB at minimum).
If you are considering console upgrade: GTA 6 is a reasonable reason to upgrade to current-gen. Do not upgrade earlier than 3 months before launch; prices drop closer to major releases.
Quick-pick table
| Game | Playtime | Crime-story fit | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 50-80 hours | Rockstar’s peak narrative | You need faster pacing |
| Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty | 40-80 hours | Neo-noir crime, modern | You bounced at launch and dislike FPS perspective |
| Mafia: Definitive Edition | 12-15 hours | 1930s crime story | You want sandbox freedom |
| Sleeping Dogs | 20-25 hours | Hong Kong action crime | You want American settings |
| L.A. Noire | 15-25 hours | Detective procedural | You want combat-heavy |
| Hi-Fi Rush | 12-15 hours | Palate cleanser (not crime) | You want theme consistency |
| Yakuza: Like a Dragon | 40-60 hours | Japanese crime + JRPG | You want Western setting |
| Elden Ring | 60-100 hours | Not crime, other must-finish | You already played it |
| Spider-Man 2 | 30-40 hours | Big city traversal fix | You dislike superhero themes |
| Max Payne 3 | 10-15 hours | Classic Rockstar shooter | You want open world |
| Saints Row | 20-40 hours | GTA parody/tribute | You hate absurdity |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 30-40 hours main | Direct predecessor | You already finished it |
The “arrive fresh” argument
Why clearing backlog matters specifically for GTA 6.
GTA launches are events. Rockstar drops once per decade. The first month of a new GTA is a culturally intense experience: Twitter talks about nothing else, YouTube content creators flood the channel, your friends all play simultaneously. Arriving to that moment with a half-finished Red Dead 2 save makes the hype harder to enjoy because you are torn between games.
Arriving to GTA 6 launch with your library clean lets you dive in fully. No “I should be playing Cyberpunk instead.” No Backlog guilt. Just GTA 6 and your full attention.
This is the opposite of “wait to play Red Dead 2.” If you have not played Red Dead 2, now is the right time, specifically so you can set it aside permanently before GTA 6.
Frequently asked questions
When will GTA 6 actually launch?
Rockstar has targeted late 2026. Historical pattern: they delay. Reasonable over/under is mid-2026 to mid-2027. Plan for “sometime in that window” and do not over-commit to specific dates.
Is it worth finishing GTA V before GTA 6?
If you have not played GTA V and want the continuity, yes. If you played GTA V at launch 11 years ago, skip the replay unless you specifically want it.
How long will GTA 6 take to finish?
Estimate based on GTA V: 30-40 hours main story, 60-80 with side content, 100+ for completionism. GTA 6 is likely longer. Budget accordingly.
Should I pre-order GTA 6?
Rockstar games rarely need pre-ordering; day-one availability is reliable. Pre-order only for specific perks you want. Otherwise, buy at launch.
What if GTA 6 gets delayed again?
Keep doing the same thing: finish backlog games, do not rush your current playthrough. The backlog you clear now pays off whenever GTA 6 lands.
