The Duskbloods: Bloodborne’s Potential Spiritual Successor?

The latest Nintendo Direct introduced a line of new games for the next addition to the Nintendo console line, the Switch 2. While most people hoped to see Silksong get a confirmed date sometime this year, none of us expected a new title from FromSoftware, The Duskbloods.

When the trailer started, the man sprawled out on the chair with the moonlight illuminating the room set off alarm bells for fans of Bloodborne. As the words “I give you…my blood…” filled listeners’ ears, hopes rose. As the woman continued to speak, mentioning transporting the man to a night of moonlight to humanity’s very dusk, a blood-red sigil appeared on his hand. Then, the black screen with the name FromSoftware appeared, and fans lost their collective brain cell.

We are so back.

The Duskbloods Showcase

The environment showcases gothic architecture with industrial upgrades, including trains and jet packs. New character models appear, introducing players to potential NPCs. These NPCs appear to have their own fighting styles. However, it wouldn’t be a Bloodborne successor without cosmic horrors. This comes in the form of a winged moon with a creepy face and tentacles coming out of its mouth.

The trailer showcases new abilities, features, and weapons. We can bite enemies like a vampire and take a black entity into our bodies. We can also turn into a T-Rex with human legs, which is so wild, but I am here for it. Guns are now able to shoot in rapid succession instead of the singular shot. The trailer also features a chakram, a rounded sword blade, as a weapon. I’m excited to play with a chakram. I loved using the Uroboros’s Eye in Lies of P. If FromSoftware takes some inspiration from the weapon usage in that game for The Duskbloods, I will be so excited.

Near the end of the trailer, a man in white pajamas and a helmet enters a chapel and makes a gesture similar to the Make Contact gesture from Bloodborne, saying the moon tears will flow for one and one alone. Connecting this with the moon enemy earlier in the trailer, I don’t think it’d be too farfetched to believe that there will be more cosmic horrors to come. Speaking of horrors, at the end of the trailer, there was a shot of a giant rat with wings. If this is an enemy, I hope it’s not as annoying to fight as the winged dogs and barking birds in Bloodborne’s final level.

Gameplay

Unfortunately, this isn’t your typical FromSoft game. According to the description, it’s following Nightreign into the PvPvE online multiplayer route.

Players will play as the Bloodsworn, a group of people with special blood. This special blood gives each character special powers and allows them to join the fight for “First Blood” as the twilight of humanity approaches.

State of Play

For years, the Bloodborne fanbase has been begging Sony to remaster and release the game on PC. The State of Play has become a recurring joke for the Bloodborne fanbase as we don our clown makeup, awaiting news of a remaster and/or new ports. For Sony’s 30th anniversary, they released a celebratory video featuring Bloodbrone with the tagline “It’s about persistence.” The clown makeup came on as fans once again speculated about a remaster.

At this point, many of us were borderline delusional for an update. It’s become apparent that someone at Sony doesn’t like money or hates the game because of their inaction with the IP. While The Duskbloods isn’t a single-player action RPG, it shows promise as a multiplayer game that will hopefully build from the successes and potential failures that Elden Ring Nightreign may have this upcoming May.

For now, fans are excited that they have a potential spiritual successor to Bloodborne in terms of aesthetics and combat features. The Duskbloods is scheduled for a 2026 release.
