11 Bit Studios announced Last Variable, a new DLC for The Alters, dropping July 13th on PC and consoles. The headline number is 20 hours of new content built around an entirely new progression loop. If you played The Alters and wanted more, the date is set. If you have not played it yet and were waiting to see if the studio would support the game post-launch, this is your answer. What Last Variable Actually Adds The expansion centers on Jan Scientist, one of the alternate-self characters from the base game, who stays behind after the other Jans leave to pursue something he calls his true calling. He assembles a new crew of specialist Jans and sets out to investigate a phenomenon called the Oasis. Mechanically, Last Variable introduces three new systems: terraforming, scientific research, and underground base building. The progression loop is described as built around exploration and research rather than the survival management of the base game. You reshape the surface of the planet, transform barren regions into biomes, and deal with the consequences of what you change. The tagline 11 Bit is using, “even though they look like you, they don’t always think like you”, suggests the crew dynamics play differently from the base game.
