Super Smash, But Nickelodeon in All-Star Brawl – Gamespot
Most Nickelodeon games are for a younger audience, so I was surprised to see a “bombastic battle” from the people who brought us SpongeBob Squarepants. All-Star Brawl draws immediate comparisons to the world of Super Smash Bros, but has an art style that is about as cartoony as you’d expect.
The game features 20 themed levels and 14 characters from across some of our favorite TV shows. All-Star Brawl’s roster is actually fairly limited considering the ridiculous number of IPs that Nickelodeon can draw from. I expect the total list of playable characters to at least double over the next several updates.
Speaking of characters, am I the only person who doesn’t know what The Loud House is?? I saw two characters from this show in the roster and thought they got lost on their way to another game…
You’ve both couch co-op and online modes available at launch. Since All-Star Brawl looks less intimidating than its Smash counterpart, I’d imagine the competitive scene will take longer to develop.
If you remember Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale back in the day, this spinoff goes down a similar route. My early favorite for super-strong boi of All-Star Brawl is Nigel Thornberry, who was a legend in his time. SpongeBob gets the most love on release, with three playable characters hailing from Bikini Bottom.
The movesets in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl look hilarious, with belly bumps, karate chops, and unique items to equip. I’m really excited by the prospect of smacking characters around with cartoon-based items! Nickelodeon also promises “many more surprises”, which leaves the door open for some wacky game mechanics for this type of game.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is slated for a Fall 2021 release on PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox. You can pre-order it now and sign up for the mailing list to hear more updates in the future!
