You know that feeling when you boot up NBA 2K franchise mode, look at the league, and think “half these teams have no reason to exist”? The Thunder are loaded for a decade. The Wizards are speedrunning the lottery. And somewhere in between, 20 fanbases are just vibing with zero hope.
I got tired of it. So I did something about it.
We tore down all 30 NBA rosters. Every player into one pool, 300 deep. Then an algorithm redrafted the entire league with one goal: make every single team good, and no team great.
The result is The Great Rebalance, a fully interactive page where every franchise lands between 88 and 89 OVR. You can hover any team for its 2K-style ratings, click any player for his card, simulate full seasons, run matchups, and make trades until you break the whole thing.
Fair warning: you will lose an evening to this.
The Rules of the Redraft
Here’s how the draft works, because the details matter.
All 300 players got ranked off the real 2025-26 season. SGA’s back-to-back MVP year, the Knicks winning it all, Cooper Flagg’s Rookie of the Year run, Giannis landing in Miami. All of it baked in, plus the full 2026 first-round rookie class.
Then the draft runs 10 rounds with a hard rule: each team gets exactly one player from every talent tier of 30. One top-30 guy per team. One player ranked 31-60. And so on down the roster. Nobody stacks two superstars. Nobody ends up with a G-League starting five.
There are actually three drafts on the page:
Cap Draft. Real 2026-27 salaries, and every payroll has to fit under the $200.4M luxury tax line. The optimizer squeezed all 30 payrolls between $183M and $185M. Victor Wembanyama on his $16.9M rookie-scale year becomes the single most valuable asset in basketball, which feels correct.
Pure Talent. Salaries ignored completely. The talent spread between the best and worst team is 0.3 points. Payrolls run from $121M to $226M, which tells you everything about how broken real NBA contracts are.
Keeper Mode. Added July 8 after Reddit demanded it. Every franchise locks its top two current players, so the Cavs keep Mitchell and Mobley, the Thunder keep SGA and Chet, and the algorithm only redrafts the other eight spots. LeBron was a free agent when we ran it, so no team gets to keep him. He goes back in the pool like everyone else.
Every roster also guarantees a real starting five plus a full backup unit. No team ends up playing a point guard at center like my old 2K MyLeague saves after the CPU auto-signs three shooting guards.
The Season Sim Is Where It Gets Fun
Balanced rosters sound nice in theory. The season simulator is the proof.
Hit the Season tab and simulate 82 games. Because every team sits at 88-89 OVR, the standings come out different every single run. I simmed five seasons while testing and got five different champions. One run had the Hornets winning 58 games. The Hornets.
Run the playoffs and you get a full bracket, a Finals result, and confetti in your champion’s colors. Then run it back and watch a completely different team win. That’s what parity actually looks like, and no real sports league (or 2K roster file) has ever given it to us.
Try to Break the League
My favorite part is the Trade Machine, mostly because it’s a challenge.
Pick two teams, swap any players you want, and watch the league balance meter react. It starts green at a 1.5-point talent spread. Start funneling stars to one roster and the meter turns yellow, then red, then tells you flat out: “you broke the league.”
It’s weirdly satisfying to rebuild a superteam inside a system designed to prevent superteams. Like speedrunning the exact problem we were trying to fix.
The Matchup tab does head-to-head breakdowns too. Every team’s 3PT shooting, defense, athleticism, and potential stacked side by side, with a win probability and keys to the game. The gaps are small, which is the whole point. An 88 OVR team beating another 88 OVR team comes down to style, not talent.
Why This Beats Real Franchise Mode
Look, I love NBA 2K franchise mode. But 2K’s rosters mirror reality, and reality is lopsided. The devs would never ship a patch that takes LeBron off a contender and hands the Wizards a top-10 pick from every tier, because that’s not their job.
It was, apparently, my job.
There’s something the balanced league exposes that I didn’t expect: with talent even everywhere, the interesting questions become roster construction questions. Do you want the team with elite shooting and bad rebounding? The athletic young core with a 90 potential rating? The veteran squad that’s one Achilles flare-up from disaster? Those are real choices now, because no roster is simply better.
Update: Reddit Asked For Keeper Mode. It Broke Everything.
The most common response when this hit Reddit: cool, but I want my team to keep its own stars. Lock everyone’s top two guys, redraft the rest, and surely you get most of the parity while keeping the identity.
So I built it. The Keeper Mode toggle is live on the page now.
Short version: parity dies instantly. The full redraft gets the gap between the best and worst team down to 0.3 points of talent. Keeper Mode blows that out to 11.1 points, even with the optimizer leveling the other eight roster spots as hard as it can. OKC keeping SGA and Chet sits at 90 OVR. Memphis keeping its best two sits at 87. No amount of role player shuffling closes that.
Which accidentally proves the whole thesis. The stars ARE the league. You can shuffle everyone’s sixth men forever and nothing changes. If you want real parity, you have to touch the untouchables, and that’s exactly why the actual NBA never will.
While I was in there, I also re-audited the full player pool against current 2026-27 rosters. A couple of guys who left for Europe came out, ten rotation players the first pass missed went in. If you noticed Malik Beasley was missing, you were right, and he isn’t anymore.
Go Sim a Season
The whole thing lives here: The Great Rebalance. No login, no download, works on your phone.
Sim a season and drop your champion in the comments. If you manage to get a team above 92 OVR in the trade machine without the balance meter calling you out, I want screenshots, because I’m pretty sure it’s impossible.
Who won your simulated title? Post your bracket in the comments or tag us @TwoAverageGamers. Bonus points if the Hornets win it all for you too.
