Some Mortal Kombat Background

April 2019 was the birth month of Mortal Kombat 11. It added various characters, including Spawn, Fujin, Rambo, Robocop, Mileena, and a few others. By 2022, it sold more than 15 million copies. Recently, Netherealm Studios released a trailer to showcase its upcoming MK installment.

After the events of Mortal Kombat 11, the new Fire God, Liu Kang, changed the whole universe of Mortal Kombat. This significant change ushers Mortal Kombat into a new era, leading to a fresh roster of characters and game mechanics.

New Kombat System

The new combat in Mortal Kombat One has been reworked for players to choose their teams. Each team will consist of one main character and one assist teammate. These assists are called Kameo fighters, which are characters designed to support the main playable character. From how they’re described, they seem to be separate and unplayable from the main roster.

Multiple characters have been confirmed for this new universe, including Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Currently, little is confirmed about which is the main fighter and which is a Kameo fighter.

Connecting to the New Universe

Mortal Kombat One will have a variety of modes, both offline and online. The only announced mode is the story mode, allowing players to explore Lui Kang’s newly designed universe. More modes will be revealed later before the game’s upcoming release.

Online multiplayer will include rollback netcode. This netcode is more effective for managing online lag than other netcodes like delay-based. Other netcodes will play an online match for both players, though will freeze/lag the match if either side receives poor internet. It gets worse in greater distances between players. Rollback diminishes the online lag by predicting player inputs and having more online stability, even between countries. When dealing with poor internet, the netcode will reset/rollback player position to match player inputs without freezing the game.

Internet isn’t needed to play Mortal Kombat One, though some features and modes will require an online connection. Online subscriptions from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are required for online multiplayer on consoles.

Result of New Universe

The trailer was only cinematic. From previous reveals, like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, the game’s graphics will closely resemble the revealed trailer.

Gore and fatalities will be more brutal and detailed. Every character will be redesigned with new and familiar techniques. The only major concern will be how well the new Kameo system will fit into Mortal Kombat’s gameplay.

There will be two different meta-tier lists for Mortal Kombat One: one for the main playable roster and one for Kameo fighters. If the Kameo roster has only one way to assist (like Marvel vs Capcom 1), they can lose their viability to stronger assists. Viewers would only see assists that greatly benefit certain characters, making toxic meta teams.

If the Kameo characters have multiple ways to support in battle (like Blazeblue Crosstag Battle and Dragon Ball Fighterz), it can give each assist more purpose in different teams. There will still be low-tier assists, but they can show value for different players. This will make the competitive teams more varied.

The devs will reveal more about the game once we get closer to its launch. Mortal Kombat One will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Steam on September 19, 2023.
