Video Game News Digest – March 16, 2025
Welcome to our daily digest of the most recent video game news! The highlights for today include:
- The RPG Wyrdsong, crafted by former Bethesda talent, is not cancelled. However, it is no longer going to be an open-world game due to a reduction in staff.
- An upcoming RPG that caters to my tastes allows the player to role-play as a kleptomaniac food connoisseur in a noir-style city, on an epic quest to create the ‘ultimate sandwich’.
Without further ado, let’s delve into the details of today’s gaming news.
Wyrdsong: The RPG Developed by Ex-Bethesda Talent is Still Alive, But No Longer Open World
Source: PC Gamer – March 16, 2025
For those who recall, Wyrdsong was introduced three years ago during the Gamescom Opening Night Live. It was heralded as an intriguing, open-world RPG developed by the masterminds behind Skyrim, Fallout, and The Outer Worlds. Set in a distorted medieval Portugal, Wyrdsong was designed to delve into the mythological roots of the Knights Templar. It allowed players to craft their own character and journey across a 12th-century landscape brimming with castles, coastlines, and mountains. Unfortunately, its developer, Something Wicked Games, fell short of the legendary wealth associated with the Templars. In 2022, the studio received a seed investment of $13.2 million from NetEase.

Anticipating a Unique RPG: The Adventure of a Food-Loving Kleptomaniac in a Noir City
Source: PC Gamer – March 16, 2025
Upon my initial exploration of the Moves of the Diamond Hand demo, I chose a character skilled in “Observation” and “Wit.” I believed these traits would be beneficial in what I had assumed to be a dialogue-heavy, investigative RPG. Initially, I deemed the “Cooking” skill to be as insignificant as the swimming skill in Deus Ex—something that would likely have unintended consequences. However, to my surprise, the second challenge presented a cooking solution. Furthermore, the culinary path appears to be highly advantageous in this unique blend of adventure and RPG gaming. This revelation led me to reconsider my initial character choice.

UK Deals Guide: Top ASUS ROG Ally Optimisations and Upgrades
Source: IGN – March 16, 2025
The ASUS ROG Ally is an impressive handheld gaming PC. After spending a considerable amount of time with both the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme 512GB and ROG Ally X 1TB models, I can confidently affirm that upgrading is a worthwhile investment. Both models deliver exceptional performance. However, the Ally X’s enhanced battery life, an additional USB-C port, and increased RAM make a noticeable difference in daily usage. If you’re deliberating between the two, rest assured that both are excellent choices. Yet, for those seeking longer gaming sessions or require greater expandability, the Ally X stands out.

Fields of Mistria, the most popular farming simulation since Stardew Valley, releases its second major update, introducing lava caves and dream-unlocked pets
Source: PC Gamer – March 15, 2025
Fields of Mistria, a nostalgic farming simulation, made quite a splash when it debuted on Steam’s early access platform late last year. Over 16,000 reviewers have given it ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ ratings. The game also found favor within PC Gamer’s very own farming game enthusiasts, with Associate Editor Lauren Morton naming it her personal Game of the Year for 2024. “Fields of Mistria is deeply connected to its roots, drawing from both classic farming simulations and ’90s magical girl anime,” she wrote in December. Now, NPC Studio, the game’s developer, has released its second major update, adding an array of new features.

Steam’s annual spring sale is in full swing, featuring a host of impressive discounts. You can now grab Doom 2016 for less than two dollars and Undertale for under a dollar. However, the most striking bargain comes from EA, slashing the price of their popular multiplayer shooter Battlefield 1 by a staggering 95%. Since its release in 2016, Battlefield 1 has held its value, usually retailing for around $40/£35. With EA’s hefty discount, the price tumbles to a mere $2/£1.50. It’s an enticing offer, but it’s worth considering whether investing in a nine-year-old Battlefield game is the right choice for you.

The Day Before’s Studio Allegedly Sues Russian Website for Labeling Game as a ‘Scam’
Source: PC Gamer – March 15, 2025
According to initial reports by 80 Level, Fntastic, the studio behind The Day Before, has allegedly filed a lawsuit against the Russian news site, Yakutia.info. This site is based in Yakutia, Siberia, the founders’ hometown of Fntastic. The lawsuit alleges that Yakutia.info damaged Fntastic’s reputation by labeling the company’s behavior around The Day Before as a “scam.” Yakutia.info, the source of this news, states that the lawsuit is centered on a story that labeled Fntastic’s behavior as a “scam” and another story that quoted YouTube influencers accusing The Day Before of plagiarizing game mechanics from other games. It’s worth mentioning that I accessed Yakutia.info’s story through Google’s automated translation.

The Unparalleled Narrative Excellence of Assassin’s Creed 2 and 3
Source: IGN – March 15, 2025
Among the numerous memorable moments in the Assassin’s Creed series, one that stands out occurs at the beginning of Assassin’s Creed 3. Here, we witness Haytham Kenway rounding up his group of supposed assassins in the New World. The illusion is compelling. Haytham wields a hidden blade and exudes a charisma akin to previous series protagonist, Ezio Auditore. He seemingly plays the hero, rescuing Native Americans from prison and defying British redcoats. However, it is only when he voices the infamous phrase, “May the Father of Understanding guide us,” that we realize we’ve been siding with our arch-nemesis, the Templars, all along.

Playing the Infamously Censored Manhunt 2
Source: PC Gamer – March 15, 2025
There was a time when Rockstar Games released more than just a couple of titles per decade. It may seem hard to believe now, but as someone who experienced that fruitful era, I can vouch for its reality. Consider the year when Manhunt 2 was launched; it was squeezed between the releases of Vice City Stories and Bully, followed by GTA 4 and Midnight Club: Los Angeles the subsequent year. In a striking display of Rockstar’s once-packed release schedule, the publisher rolled out four unique takes on Los Angeles within a span of eight short years. These include GTA 5, San Andreas, LA Noire, and the aforementioned Midnight Club, all boasting immersive open-world settings.

Proposed New Star Wars Trilogy Highlights Need for Fresh Voices in Hollywood
Source: IGN – March 16, 2025
“Mankind has colonized many worlds, aided by technology enabling faster-than-light travel. This advancement is made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species ever encountered by mankind. Most of those involved in this dangerous hunt are involuntary laborers.” This intriguing premise was reported last fall to be the backdrop of a new Star Wars trilogy. The renowned writer, producer, and director Simon Kinberg is allegedly overseeing this project at Lucasfilm. Although the trilogy is unlikely to be a continuation of Chapters 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, it is believed to revolve around the ongoing narrative of Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey Skywalker.

Get a Sneak Peek of Dune Awakening’s Massive Coriolis Storms in the Latest Trailer
Source: PC Gamer – March 15, 2025
Despite being familiar with the overarching themes of Dune Awakening, the survival MMO game, I found myself surprised by the depth of its gameplay. I had heard about the autonomous giant sandworms and the thrilling air-to-air ornithopter combat. However, it was only recently that I truly understood how these elements coalesce. Funcom’s latest offering is not merely a straightforward interpretation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece. It involves desert survival, high-level political machinations, and factional wars. But what does that mean for the average player like me, Joe Fremen?
