Last Week in Gaming – July 30, 2019

Welcome to TAG Roundup!

Ever wonder what you missed in the world of gaming last week? No worries – we’ve got you covered!

We read a ton of video game articles each week and wanted to share some of our favorites with the Average Gamer community. We’ll feature everything from previews to reviews and everything in between.

The articles we share will be from a combination of well-known sources (like IGN) and more niche blogs that you may not have heard of. In the previous TAG Roundup post, we talked about Overwatch role queue,  Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Gears 5 and more!

This week will be a little shorter than last but still equally exciting. Let’s get to it!

Marvel Movies on the Horizon – Polygon

Comic-Con has come and gone. One highlight was the announcement of new productions by Marvel which will arrive over the next 24 months.

I’m most excited about Thor: Love and Thunder but will probably end up watching Black Widow and The Falcon on the big screen as well.

Smartphone to Rival Nintendo Switch – Android Authority

Asus has released an attachment for one of their latest phones which replicate the Nintendo Switch form factor. Without reading the article, you might think these were a third-party product created for the Switch itself.

The immediate benefit is that you can have a Switch-like experience while on the go without having to bring your Switch with you. Unfortunately, the review describes the controllers as having “too many buttons” with a poor feel. This is an interesting option for people with the ROG phone but I don’t see it catching fire like the Nintendo Switch has.

New Competitive Training Card Game – Polygon

The trailer for this game has me really hype! I haven’t been into competitive card games since the Pokemon TCG and I never gave Hearthstone a try. For some reason (maybe it’s the combination of “blockchain” + “free game”), I’m really drawn to Skyweaver.

Here are some of the key differences that the devs say will separate Skyweaver from the rest of the games in this genre:

There are no caps on resources; players can eventually collect a vast pool of energy from which they can play cards, allowing for big and dramatic turns. The Guard mechanic on minions only protects the player’s health pool, and not allied minions, giving players more options to deal with a board that the enemy player is controlling. All 350 (or so) cards will be in the available competitive pool at launch, creating a wide variety of potential deck combinations.

Android on Switch – Wololo

Do we really need to run an Android OS on Switch? Probably not.

Will people make it happen anyway? Most definitely!

The Nintendo Switch is a modders dream given the combination of motion controls, touch screen and mobility. LineageOS is based on Android 8.1 and should be available (unofficially) on the Switch in this week.

If you’re adventurous and want to tinker with your console, proceed at your own risk. The reward is being able to play GTA: San Andreas, so yea, it’s probably worth it.

Mahomes is Unreal in Madden 20 – Uproxx

Do you remember how frustrating it was to play against Michael Vick in Madden 2004? Well, Patrick Mahomes apparently makes ’04 Vick look like a middle school QB.

Twitter shared some footage of some impossible throws downfield by the reigning NFL MVP. I expect the Chiefs will see a high usage rate in this game thanks to their superhero shot caller.

I can promise you that Mahomes will be the most annying player you’ve ever faced in any madden ??? pic.twitter.com/n40r84SHMO

“Bazooka” is real. I’m not good at math but I believe that’s about 83 yards in the air. pic.twitter.com/plU7DNAy0p

The very next play. Mahomes is going to be the reason for a lot of broken controllers. pic.twitter.com/g2C10C6o23

Horizon Dawn Comes to Overwatch – Kotaku

In Horizon Zero Dawn, you battle mechanized dinosaurs with an advanced bow and swift movement. The protagonist, Aloy, is a fan favorite who has inspired cosplay, concept art and left a lot of people asking for a sequel.

Ladislas Gueros took the next step and actually created an Aloy character model in Overwatch. It’s similar to Hanzo, given the bow and everything, and the details are incredible. Here’s to hoping that Blizzard brings her into the game as a guest hero!

Crews + Bautista Gears Dream – FlickeringMyth

I’m a huge Terry Crews fan. Most recently, I’ve been watching him in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and his character is hilarious.

Terry is pretty into playing video games to hang out more with his kids, so it’s no surprise that he wants to be in a video game-inspired movie. Only time will tell if he can make his way into this film, but I know many people who would watch him in a Gears of War movie.

Damn. I like this. I like this very much. https://t.co/rMy6z3jQ9O
