More than half of gamedev professionals see GenAI as harmful, according to GDC’s latest survey
The 2026 State of the Game Industry report is out, and boy, do we have some numbers for you. A whopping 52% of developers now say generative AI’s impact on the industry is negative, up from 30% in 2025. Despite this, GenAI tool adoption hasn’t budged, with 52% using them and 35% not. Positive sentiment is dwindling, from 13% in 2025 to just 7% in 2026.
Looks like optimism is on the decline. Interestingly, the report also shows that game devs are spending about 20% more time tweaking AI-generated content to meet quality standards. On the flip side, 60% of developers feel that generative AI helps speed up the prototyping process, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
