We’ve seen a recent trend of Hotline Miami-inspired games that use fast-paced first-person shooters with short levels, unique visuals, and interesting game mechanics such as Anger Foot and Mullet Jack. A new contender, known as “I Am Your Beast” enters the ring. The game was developed by Strange Scaffold, creators of “El Paso Elsewhere” and “Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator.”
What is I Am Your Beast About
In “I Am Your Beast” you play Alphonse Harding, a retired secret agent of six years who is asked to finish ‘one last job’, one too many times. Declining this mission leads to a brutal battle between you and the Cover Operations Initiative (COI).
With your past guerilla warfare experiences and former allies’ equipment. Navigate through trees, pipes, and hills to avoid detection. Devise combat strategies with stolen enemy weapons to reach your escape route. Turn the table against the Cover Operations Initiative as you use the environment in your favor and take each opponent one by one before they close in on your location.
Visuals and Gameplay of I Am Your Beast
The game uses innovative, kinetic typography and voice acting to deliver its story and character interactions. The gameplay visuals feature a distinctive comic-book-inspired art style.
“I Am Your Beast” strongly emphasizes replayability and strategy. Based on the demo, you start every level with your fists and navigate to an escape hatch. Along the way, players find weapons that can take out each target as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Your first run on each level will most likely be sloppy and lack momentum. However, upon death and consistent replayability, you gain knowledge of enemy positioning, environmental hazards, and pick-ups.
I Am Your Beast Weapons and Combat System
The weapons and combat are subject to change upon release. Based on the demo you have a variety of weapons that range from your fists to rifles:
Fists are your starter weapons for each level in the demo. It takes three strikes to kill an enemy. Useful when dealing with only one but deadly when there are a couple nearby.
Kicking is a melee attack that is used in the game to finish off stunned enemies. Whenever you throw a weapon or item at an enemy, they will be temporarily stunned. To kill them, you’ll need to kick them in the head.
Tree bark is another melee weapon that kills an enemy in an instant but breaks upon strike. The weapon is useful for a quick kill to get the enemy’s weapon.
Combat knives can be found in containers or dropped by enemies. It has three action uses which takes at least two to kill a single enemy. However, when thrown, it can instantly kill an enemy. It’s a single-use weapon so players cannot be used again.
Pistols drop from black-colored enemies. You have seven bullets so use them wisely. Players need two or three shots to the body to kill an enemy but one bullet to the head for a clean instant kill. If you run out, you can throw your gun to stun the enemy temporarily.
Shotguns come with three bullets and seem to instantly kill an enemy per bullet, whether you aim for the head or body.
Rifles come with fourteen bullets. It takes almost ten shots to take out a single enemy in the body but only one bullet for the head.
Each weapon can aid the player in maintaining a well-executed combat flow. If you understand what each weapon does and how to use it to your advantage, you can rack up the kills. Also, expect more weapons or objects to be added when the full game releases.
I Am Your Beast Delivers High-Energy Fun
“I Am Your Beast” delivers an exhilarating, fun experience in its demo gameplay. It stands out with its unique style and engaging mechanics, offering a thrill similar to games like “Anger Foot,” “Mullet Jack,” and “Post Void.” The fast-paced action and vibrant visuals keep players on their toes, making every moment exciting.
The demo alone captures the essence of what makes indie games so captivating. It promises a full game that’s sure to be a blast for fans of high-energy, adrenaline-pumping gameplay.
