Sequel to Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched on the Switch in March 2017. This open-world iteration of the Zelda franchise was critically acclaimed and received stellar reviews from the gaming community. Fans gushed over the visual design, exploration mechanics, combat, and story, which all combined for a memorable action-adventure experience.
Two years later, a sequel was announced, increasing the Zelda anticipation by about 1000%. Nintendo teased us with a brief clip of Zelda and Link exploring a cave. Since that 2019 trailer, it’s mostly been radio silence…until now!
Breath of the Wild Sequel Adds Plenty of Game Mechanics
This year’s Nintendo Direct delivered 98 seconds of Breath of the Wild 2 highlights. We saw everything from enemies and weapons, to new mechanics that Link can take advantage of on his adventure.
The trailer starts with some evil dark matter attacking link and a creepy, mischievous villain who looks like he hasn’t eaten in years.
Zelda falls into the abyss and we’re off to the next adventure starring our favorite Hyrulian!
Link still has his trusty glider and runs through lush fields. I also spotted some of the enemies from the original Breath of the Wild! The developers combined Bokoblins and a Stone Pebblit to form a multi-faccetted monster duo.
It looks like the Sheikah Slate got swapped out for a gauntlet sleeve a la Iron Man. With this new accessory, Link gains the ability to pass through solid materials. It’s unclear how many new skills there will be in the sequel, but I’d imagine the devs didn’t stop at ghost mode.
To heat things up, Breath of the Wild 2 even equips Link with some type of flamethrower! I’m hoping that this opens the door for even more hilarious ways to take out baddies.
The trailer pans to a sky view of a desolate land, then fades to a simple display of the 2022 release year. Since the release window is fairly large, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Nintendo will group this with the launch of a New Nintendo Switch. One can dream…
