Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, Apex Legends is one of the most popular games in 2022. Apex is a game where squads of 3 duke it out in a battle royale format until 1 squad is crowned champion. Squads maneuver around one of four maps using an array of weapons, abilities, and even vehicles. The team at Respawn has done a good job of introducing new equipment, characters, and balance changes to keep the game fresh and fun. 

Even better, they have been excelling at promoting diversity and aligning themselves with ongoing social awareness groups. Pride Awareness, Suicide Prevention, Stop Asian Hate, and Black Lives Matter are all organizations or causes that Respawn has taken deliberate action in standing up for. This is reflected through in-game badges and through their character design. Apex Legends is a leader in diversity in gaming. Unsurprisingly, it is the most diverse game in the industry.

Apex Legends has an almost even gender split amongst its roster. Minorities are actually the majority, and several of the characters identify as something other than heterosexual. That’s a lot of diversity for a video game!

We partnered with Blerd to author an in-depth look at the three black characters in Apex. Bangalore, Lifeline, and Seer each have unique backgrounds. All three offer Apex Legends much more than a simple box check for characters with darker skin tones. Each character is thoughtfully conceived with engaging backstories.
